Frankly and the Backpack Incident
One of my more mischevious and accident-prone house dragons is Frankly. His color is a shining amethyst purple that's really quite pretty, though he doesn't like to be told that. He loves to scribble pictures on any scrap of paper he can get his paws on. I didn't mind so much when he used junk mail envelopes or old grocery lists, but I didn't appreciate it when he started doodling on my nice stationery. He promised not to do that any more, and in return I always try to give him a steady supply of paper all his own. This keeps us both happy.
Apart from drawing, Frankly likes to explore. He says he's always looking for "artistic inspiration", but I don't think that entirely explains why he crawls into potted plants and pretends he's lost in a jungle.
One day, Frankly snuck into my backpack. He knows perfectly well he's not supposed to do that, but he thought he was being clever. I grabbed the backpack without realizing he was in there and walked all the way to the library with him. It was cold and snowing outside, but Frankly stayed cozy enough in a nest of Kleenex he'd made for himself. He even fell asleep.
All this time I never suspected anything. At the library I found some books to take home--they were rather big books--checked them out, and slipped them into my backpack just as I was leaving.
The backpack seemed to squeal, frightening me. One of the books had landed on Frankly's leg. He cried and carried on and said his leg was broken and that he was going to die. (I'm sure it must have hurt tremendously, but Frankly likes to dramatize just a bit.)
I got him home as quickly as I could and let Shine have a look at him. Shine is a silver dragon who knows a thing or two about healing. She bandaged up his leg, then chided him for being foolish. Luckily the damage wasn't great, and his leg would mend soon enough. Until it did, Shine made sure he spent much of his time in bed. He complained, of course, until we would remind him that his leg wouldn't be broken if he hadn't stole away into my backpack in the first place. Then he would sulk and sip the herbal tea Shine gave him to help him go to sleep.
He's doing better now, though he's a little more cautious than he used to be. And now, I always make sure to check my backpack for little dragons before I go out.
